Changeover Dinner 2020
We enjoyed a lovely evening for our recent Changeover Dinner where we introduced the new board and awarded some of our members for their achievements. It was wonderful to catch up with so many members, partners and guests. Immediate Past President Michelle Piotrowski extends a warm welcome to President Margaret Robertson and also a thank you to all of the hard-working board members. |
Paul Harris Fellow 2020
"Our Paul Harris Fellow for this year has been with the club for a number of year and is always eager to promote the values of Rotary. They never hesitate to help and is always working tirelessly to help those within our club and also those outside of Rotary. This person truly embraces what it means to be a Rotarian. Their involvement with our club and that in the wider community is outstanding.
Their time as President saw our club achieve many goals and instilled a greater pride in the aspects of what it means to be a Rotarian. Their involvement has ensured our club has been managed with precision and camaraderie. Marg Garret I present you as our Paul Harris Fellow Recipient for 2020. I have heard you spent many years as a teacher and school counselor in Whyalla, South Australia, including being the Head of an Advisory Department of school counseling. This would have been an extremely challenging job, understanding the demographics of that local area. You devoted many years to Lifeline as a counselor and have been heavily involved with the South West Woman's Refuge. I believe you are the current Chair of this organisation. You are also the Secretary of your church group. You volunteer many hours of your time to these organisations and we are grateful for your Service to the community – truly embodying 'Service above Self' Marg you served as our President in 2017-18 and have sat on the Board since then including the last year as Secretary. You were Rotarian of the Year for 2014-15. During your time as President you introduced us to some new programs such as the Fellowship exchange where we were visited by a group of Canadian Rotarians and you organised an itinerary to highlight the features of Bunbury. You instigated the STAR Program (Special Training for Action in Rotary) which is designed to give new members the knowledge and confidence necessary to be active Rotarians, And you have sat on our Youth Committee with Franco and Shani for the last few years. We thank you for the dedication and extensive input you have given this club and for your work on much correspondence and compliance. We are sure you will continue to achieve Rotary greatness and your unwavering selflessness and work ethic are a true asset to the Bunbury Rotary Club." Congratulations Margaret Garrett on your award as a Paul Harris Fellow. |
PHF Sapphire Pins"We bring your attention to 2 members who have been nominated for a Sapphire upgrade to their Paul Harris Fellow.
They have worked alongside each other in one of our most important charity organisations and have been with this organisation since the beginning 15 years ago. So Barry Johnston and Dennis Evans, for your outstanding commitment to Foodbank and for driving the truck every Thursday to collect produce from the orchards in Donnybrook and surrounds, I hereby award you both Sapphire pins. Dennis has been a Rotarian for 31 years Dennis holds our annual new year BBQ in January and is a Past President of Bunbury Central in 1997. Barry has been a Rotarian for over 45 years. He has meticulously maintained the history of the club and was awarded his original PHF in 2007. Their service to our club and the greater community is to be commended." |
ROTARIAN OF THE YEAR
"This person is somewhat a quiet achiever working in the background to ensure our programs are well-managed and executed in a timely and efficient manner.
Many of you may not have engaged much with this member but I encourage you to do so, in that you may learn that their values instill inspiration and uplifting of the human spirit to achieve great things, regardless of the adversity life can throw at you. Their work with local not-for-profit organisations has been well respected and awarded. This member's main focus is on youth and leadership; and for this reason they have elected to continue as a board member in the position of Youth Director/New Generations. Franco Harkins we present your Rotarian of the Year certificate and perpetual shield. |
CLUB SERVICE AWARDJohn Thomson was nominated by our president for a Special District Award. This award is for excellence in Avenues of Service and nominations must be approved by our District Governor.
"For your contribution to our club as attendance officer for over 7 years; your leadership as President in 2009-10; your positions on the board and importantly your congenial attitude and Rotarian value system, I would like to present you with this Avenues of Service Award. John has been a member of our club for nearly 15 years and in this time has contributed to the functionality of our club, has always volunteered for our projects including the boat raffle and exchange student programs; and can always been seen helping during meetings with properties or collecting fines." |
"Franco arrived from Scotland in 2011 and has worked in the construction materials testing industry for 29 years. He is the General Manager of Civitest Pty Ltd. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours and is a member of of the Institute Of Civil Engineers both here in Australia and the UK.
His involvement in WA iSports along with their hard-working team which includes Rotaract president Rick Wells saw them win the Woolworths Community Group of the Year Award during the Western Australian Regional Achievement and Community Awards in Perth in October. Franco is now Chairperson of this not-for-profit community group whose focus is on providing a diverse range of sporting programs with full inclusion of those with disabilities.
Within Rotary Franco has been responsible for managing our sponsorship and engagement in the various youth programs such as RYPEN, RYLA, National Youth Science Forum and Youth Exchange Programs. He has worked closely with Rotaract to help mentor the newly formed club.
We look forward to the involvement you bring in motivating our leaders of the future."

WORDS OF WISDOM FROM PAUL HARRIS (as mentioned in our President's speech)
May all things you ought have be yours.
May you not fall into the popular error of thinking that happiness is to be found in outdoing your neighbours.
May it always be yours to look beneath the veneer of life to the solid substance which lies beneath.
May you be builders, not mere climbers.
May you be able to appraise life's blessings at their real worth.
May you be free to act in accordance with the dictates of your own conscience and good judgment.
May you not be slaves to meaningless customs, social or otherwise.
May you shun the groove followers.
May you have vision to discern what is right, and the health, strength and will to do it.
